As a young architect starting out in the 1990’s I designed and built a series of art galleries in lower Manhattan, including two spaces for the non-profit White Columns, an alternative space with a history dating back to the 1970’s. When the lease on their last location (completed in 1998) expired, they moved to a new space on Horatio Street. The current design builds on principles defined in those early projects: uncluttered walls for the display of art, generous exhibition spaces, carefully detailed, respecting the materials and proportions of the existing architectural fabric.
