J/S House

The original structure, completed in 1989, was an artist live/work studio, designed by Richard L. McElhiney in collaboration with the artist client Steve Vannort. The current owners are art collectors. Our brief was to double the size of the house, creating living space, a gallery for their collection and a new second-floor bedroom overlooking the valley. This is a space about living with art. The architectural presence lies in abstract space, light, and view, and the calibration of measure, rhythm, orientation and movement.
